Xcel Sets World Record With 55.6% Wind Energy Penetration

Colorado Energy Strikes Again
Article Link
November 29, 2011

Wind power has faced skepticism for many years (though most of it has come from, or been funded by, competing energy sources) on grounds that its variability cannot be accommodated on utility systems.

Xcel sets world record with 55.6% wind energy penetration
Minneapolis-based utility Xcel Energy set a world record early on the morning of Oct. 6, with 55.6 percent of the electricity on its Public Service of Colorado (PSCo) system between the hours of 4 and 5 a.m. coming from wind power, according to the Denver Post.

The Post's Mark Jaffe quoted AWEA's Manager of Transmission Policy, Michael Goggin, as saying that the previous record of 53 percent was achieved in Spain in 2009. According to the article, "Improved wind farm forecasting, energy trading and grid operating improvements are allowing more wind power to be used, Xcel executives said."

Wind power has faced skepticism for many years (though most of it has come from, or been funded by, competing energy sources) on grounds that its variability cannot be accommodated on utility systems. This is an odd claim, since utilities must already balance the amount of electricity they supply with frequent variations in customer demand, both throughout a typical day and from season to season during the year. Records like the one set by Xcel show just how little basis there is for the assertion that wind turbines cannot be integrated with other energy sources. To quote the Post's Jaffe, "Xcel's experience shows that greater penetration of wind power is possible and the lights will stay on."

California Approves Solar Contract Despite High Cost

California Approves Solar Contract Despite High Cost
By Ucilia Wang, Contributor

Tweet Share California, USA -- Should consumers pay for more for renewable energy in order to promote certain technology type? That's an interesting question raised by California regulators on Thursday, when they approved what they acknowledged to be a pricy contract for Abengoa Solar to sell power to Pacific Gas & Electric.

The California Public Utilities Commission voted 4-1 to approve the 25-year contract, which will allow Abengoa to build the 280-megawatt solar farm called Mojave Solar in southern California. The company already has secured construction permits from state and federal regulators, as well as a $1.2 billion loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy to help pay up to 80 percent of the project’s cost.

The commission staff recommended against approving the contract, saying it was way too expensive. Utilities can recoup the cost of buying renewable energy by raising rates. Contract price and terms are confidential, however, so it’s difficult to compare all those contracts that the three big utilities have signed over the years. Commissioner Mike Florio, who casted the lone “no” vote, said during the meeting that the contract will cost $1.25 billion over 25 years.

But commissioners who voted for the contract said price shouldn’t be the only deciding factor. They said the technology Abengoa will be using can produce power more consistently than, say, solar panels, and that consistency is valuable even if it isn’t reflected in the contract price. They also suggested that the state has a responsibility to support a variety of renewable energy technologies.

Abengoa plans to install rows of curved mirrors that will concentrate and direct the sunlight to create steam, which will then be piped to run a turbine to produce electricity. It’s not alone in using concentrating solar power or CSP (solar thermal) to generate power; other developers such as BrightSource Energy and SolarReserve are doing something similar.

“It’s worthwhile to spend a little more on projects like the Mojave Solar so the (state’s) renewable portfolio doesn’t rely heavily on a single technology. In other words it’ll be more balanced,” said Michael Peevey, the commission president who led the effort to approve the Mojave Solar contract.

California has had a renewable energy mandate for nearly a decade now, and the most recent change requires utilities to get 33 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020. The state mandate doesn’t say utilities have to choose solar or any type of solar technology. The eligible types of renewable energy include wind, geothermal and ocean power.

One of the commission’s responsibilities is to make sure the price of a renewable energy contract is reasonable and won’t saddle consumers will a big rate hike.

But several commissioners also believe that California should support different technologies. They noted that most of the recent proposed projects use solar photovoltaics (PV) instead. The price of solar panels has fallen more than 50 percent in the past few years, and an oversupply problem has caused many solar companies to close factories or even file bankruptcies. Energy Conversion Devices announced this week that it would suspend manufacturing all together and furlough 400 workers, and it plans to lay off 500 people by the end of this year.

What are The Prospects For Competing Solar Electric Technologies?

The argument about who wins - Solar Photovoltaics (PV), Concentrating Solar Thermal Power (CSP), or Concentrating PV (CPV) - is currently all the rage. But in reality it is too early to identify winners and losers in the overall solar industry.

The solar industry, while growing exponentially in recent times, remains in startup phase compared with conventional power, and is now beginning to experience challenges with rapidly decreasing incentives, subpar availability of transmission and distribution, and for PV, almost overnight growth from MW to multi-GW level of demand.

Moving forward, reductions in the cost of (and advances in) balance of systems (rather than the technology) will be key for PV and CPV, while advances in installation techniques are crucial for all technologies. And if CSP can overcome the cost of building thermal storage into the technology, it will have a compelling case that may tip the scale for utilities.

So if we acknowledge that the future is far from mapped out, what is the current state of play in PV, CSP and CPV?

This webinar will give a snapshot behind the development of all three of the above solar technologies, in particular looking at the following issues:

What stage of PV development are we at currently, and how will the major changes to support schemes in countries like Germany and Italy affect market development moving forward?
What innovation is taking place to drive down the cost of solar technologies and make them more cost competitive with conventional fuels? Is the recent upsurge in CSP development sustainable this time around? When (and under what conditions) will CPV break through and establish itself as a true competitor to the other solar technologies?

How to Network to Land a Green Job in 2012, Whether in Colorado-California or in Sales!

How to Network to Land a Green Job
Article Link

You’ve probably heard the saying, “It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.” That’s right, as more than half of jobs available never are advertised. This statement especially is true in the green job industry, where a rising number of green positions with potentially higher pay levels means more competition. Having strong connections with people already plugged into the green industry will make your job search process a little easier.

A few tips will make your networking experience fruitful as you seek industry jobs that allow you to help protect the environment and decrease your and others’ ecological footprints.

Do Mini-Interviews with the Bigwigs

Contact officials who lead companies in the sector of the green industry you wish to enter. For instance, call the leader of a solar firm or wind energy firm, and set up a time to speak with him or her in a mini-interview during which you ask questions about the direction of the industry and the possibility of green job opportunities in your chosen area of interest. Your goal should be to forge strong connections with important people in the green industry. This is valuable because these individuals not only can pinpoint current or future green job opportunities for you but also serve as references, thus making you more attractive when you begin applying for jobs.

Talk to Everyone You Meet

Talk to family members and friends about your hopes of landing a green job. If you ride a train into work every day, share your aspirations with a stranger there, or talk about your plans with members at church. You just might come across somebody who knows someone who works in the green jobs industry as an information technology professional or a renewable energy facility employee. If you can get in touch with these green workers, they can give you some tips on how to break into the green industry.

Visit Green Conferences

Green industry conferences are a great way for you to connect with players in the eco-friendly field face-to-face. For instance, you can visit Chicago Ideas Week, which made its debut this year in the Windy City – the home of U.S. Green Technology – and featured several speakers on green technology. In addition, the Indiana Green Expo in January 2012 will provide opportunities to sharpen your green education, learn about new products and network with businesspeople from several states. The more people you connect with, the greater your chance of claiming green job opportunities.

REC'S- Renewable Energy Certificates, How The Gov't Uses Them and How You Can Too!

The RECs system was originally implemented to encourage an additional 9,500 Gwh of renewable energy generation per year by 2010 as part of the Renewable Energy Target. Renewable Energy Certificates will play an even greater role in the recently announced renewable energy targets to be achieved by 2020 via the Solar Credits Program.

How the new Renewable Energy Target works

The government has implemented a target of 20% renewable energy sourced electricity by 2020
The current RET requires 9500 GWh of renewable energy to be delivered by energy companies
The 20/20 target requires 45000 GWh
1MWh of energy equals 1 REC, so 45,000,000 RECs will be generated to meet the 2020 target
To meet the target, energy companies must surrender RECs into their holding account at the end of every calendar year at an amount representative to 20% of their market share
If energy companies don't put sufficient RECs into the holding account, the company is fined at a rate much higher than the REC value.

RECs - renewable energy currency

One REC is equivalent to one megawatt hour of electricity generation. A renewable energy certificate can be traded for cash and the value of these certificates fluctuates according to market conditions. Basically, a REC is a form of renewable energy currency and through Energy Matters; you can sell your RECs to us and use the money as a point of sale discount on items you buy!

Owners of systems can claim RECs themselves by completing the appropriate application forms. However, this can be confusing and time consuming, so most people choose assigning their right to claim RECs to an agent, such as Energy Matters; which is a very simple process.

By taking advantage of Renewable Energy Certificates, a substantial amount of money can be saved when you buy wind and solar power equipment!

For captivating views and the Lodging prices that get slashed....it's time to head to Aspen again . This time was different, I spent a Fantastic weekend with my Fiance in Aspen and enjoyed every minute of the off season here. We stayed at the The Innsbruck Inn, a sweet place that not only is right in town but also set us up with some local trails to hike with no one around.

Yes I love to fish but this weekend had other intentions and one that still reasonates from all the fun we had, only a few moments fishing but with all the trips I've had this Spring, it wasn't that big of a deal not to fish.

pantripengaged211jeromey2skier
I fished the Frying Pan River for a bit but few hatches suprisingly. (middle pic)Having a little wine on top of Sunnyside Mtn. Closing down the Bar at the Hotel Jerome "J-bar" no better place to be, especially when you have Ditty a fellow Georgia Bulldog serving up some strong liquor drinks all night! (below-Maroon Bells Fall 2002)

maroon88

Too bad the Maroon Bells road was closed, too much snow apparently. They had 8" of snow right before we got there but fortunately we had nice weather with even 75' one day. If you do want to make the trek to Maroon Bells, it's 7 miles in and 7 miles out...that makes for one long day! Can't wait to get back there again.

If you can schedule it right and save a few pennies, try and make it to the Aspen Food & Wine Festival...talk about a wild weekend that is each year!

California's Energy Future

California's Energy Future: Aggressive Efficiency and Electrification Needed to Cut Emissions
ScienceDaily (May 24, 2011) Story Link

In the next 40 years, California's population is expected to surge from 37 million to 55 million and the demand for energy is expected to double. Given those daunting numbers, can California really reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050, as required by an executive order? Scientists from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory who co-wrote a new report on California's energy future are optimistic that the target can be achieved, though not without bold policy and behavioral changes as well as some scientific innovation.

Colorado Town Considers "How Much Renewable Energy is Feasible" - 80% by 2025?

John Farrell Article Link

A great story of a city looking to - literally - take ownership of its energy future:
The Colorado Renewable Energy Standard, as amended last year by the state Legislature, requires Xcel Energy to get 30 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

...Boulder leaders -- who let the city's 20-year franchise agreement with Xcel Energy lapse at the end of 2010 -- are now considering whether they can get an energy mix for their residents with a larger percentage of renewable energy than what Xcel is offering.

Colorado Legislature Passes Law For Clean Air, More Jobs and Conversions of Renewable Energy Sources!

Recebtly in the last session, a critical piece of environmental legislation passed by Colorado lawmakers! This was the one we've been waiting on, the landmark Clean Air, Clean Jobs Act, which mandated the shuttering of several Front Range coal-fired power plants and conversion of others to renewable energy sources or natural gas.

Many have been waiting on this to happen, now it's just putting it through and having the laws pass. This session, the legislature just completed the final step in implementing the law that was so bitterly opposed by Colorado’s coal industry last year.

The Rocky Mountain Green Summit is Coming To Denver!

Come and Join Us

Greening Rocky Mountain Green
Sustainability is at the heart of USGBC Colorado’s mission to transform the built environment. USGBC Colorado strives to minimize the environmental impact of all of its programs and events through a number of strategies. Here is what USGBC Colorado is doing at Rocky Mountain Green 2011 to minimize the environmental impact and engage venue staff, exhibitors, and attendees in greening the conference.

Venue: The Denver Marriott Tech Center has earned the ENERGY STAR® label from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its commitments to energy efficiency in hotel operations.

Transportation: Conference attendees are actively encouraged to take mass transit or to carpool to and from Rocky Mountain Green 2011. The Denver Marriott Tech Center is located ¼ mile from a RTD light rail stop, and a carpooling group was set up on eRideShare.com.

Green Exhibitors: All exhibitors are strongly encouraged to support that goal through sustainable procedures and practices of its services and its employees, vendors, and contractors. Exhibitors are asked to consider exhibit construction and material usage, staff training, packing materials, transportation and logistics, printed materials and giveaways, and strategies for minimizing waste as areas where exhibitors can contribute to a more sustainable conference. For more information on greening exhibitions and trade shows, refer to the Greenbuild Mandatory Exhibition Green Guidelines.

Federal suit challenges Colorado renewable-energy standard

Denver Business Journal
Article Link

Two nonprofit groups and a Morrison resident on Monday filed a federal lawsuit alleging that Colorado’s 30 percent renewable energy standard is unconstitutional.

The suit, filed in Denver’s U.S. District Court, claims Colorado’s renewable energy mandate discriminates against other energy resources that are “less costly, less polluting, safer and more reliable” both inside and outside the state. The interstate commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution doesn’t permit a state to impose burdens on the interstate market for electricity, lawsuit backers argue.

The suit says wind energy, in particular, costs more than traditional fuels and creates more pollution because coal or natural gas is needed to generate electricity when the wind doesn’t blow. Colorado voters first passed a renewable energy standard in 2004, calling for 10 percent of the electricity sold by Colorado’s two major investor-owned utilities, Xcel Energy Inc. and Black Hills Energy, to come from renewable resources by 2015.

Power From Two Energy Sources...Colorado Bound?

An Interesting Take on Energy Sources
Link Via Alternative Energy Site

Alternative sources of energy are clean and green but the catch is they generate less energy compared to fossil fuels. So now the scientists are trying to use different sources of alternative energy at the same place and same time to generate power. Attempts are being made to combine two forms of external energy sources such as light and heat or light and vibration to generate external energy so that enough energy can be collected for practical use. Fujitsu Laboratories have now succeeded in using hybrid energy sources to generate power. Fujitsu Laboratories wants to provide this technology for commercial use by the year 2015.
