Denver International Airport Unveils Third Solar Array

Denver International Airport Unveils Third Solar Array

On July 28, 2011, Denver International Airport hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate their third solar array panel. In attendance was Governor John Hickenlooper, former-Governor Bill Ritter, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, GEO director TJ Deora along with airport director Kim Day and representatives from Oakleaf Partners, Constellation Energy, and Quanta.

With more than 300 days of sunshine annually, Denver is an ideal environment for sun-powered energy systems. DIA installed their first two-megawatt solar energy system in 2008, followed by their second solar system which was built adjacent to the airport's fuel farm and generates 1.6 megawatts of electricity supporting the fuel farm's needs.

The third solar installation will produce at peak 4.4 megawatts of energy. 6% of the airports total energy requirements are now provided by solar
