Energy for Colorado's Economy: Creating Jobs and Economic Growth with Renewable Energy

Jobs, jobs, jobs. It’s the really important issue in this election year. Energy is another really important issue. And global warming is yet another. So it’s not surprising that green energy jobs really sounds good.

But where do these jobs occur? All energy sources make jobs. Anything that requires manufacturing things, constructing things, mining stuff or transporting stuff needs people to do those things. But the jobs come in different flavors and some help local economies more than others. And the only way to compare apples-to-apples is to normalize the number of jobs to the amount of energy produced by those jobs, and see which are local and which are not.

The Missing Link To Renewable Energy

What's the key to using alternative energy, like solar and wind? Storage -- so we can have power on tap even when the sun's not out and the wind's not blowing. In this accessible, inspiring talk, Donald Sadoway takes to the blackboard to show us the future of large-scale batteries that store renewable energy. As he says: "We need to think about the problem differently. We need to think big. We need to think cheap."

Solar Systems Debut in Boulder County Schools

This week 14 Colorado schools turned on the power to 5,000 solar panels
Article Link

Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) flipped the switch Monday on 1.4 MW of green energy generated from more than 5,000 solar panels installed on 14 different schools across the district. The ceremony was held Monday at Foothill Elementary School in Boulder. The 14-school project may be one of the largest undertaken by a school district in the country, at least a district the size as Boulder Valley.

This increases the number of buildings in the district with solar arrays to 30, half of the buildings in the system. The panels were installed by SolarCity, a national provider of clean energy services. SolarCity owns the panels and installed them at no cost to the School District. The District entered into a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the company to buy the electricity from SolarCity. In turn, SolarCity will provide full maintenance on the system.

3 Sales Tips for Leveraging Social Media, Increase Your Sales Awareness

3 Sales Tips for Leveraging Social Media

Social media impacts our lives a little bit more every day. Time spent on mobile web browsing has more than doubled over the past 2 years, and it is projected to increase another 50% over the next 4 years. A large percentage of that time is spent on social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, just to name a few. Below are statistics from the most recent study by McKinsey on the implementation of social media tools in business.

How can sales professionals make the most of social media in their selling efforts?
 1) Develop a Plan Setting up an account on Facebook, LinkedIn, or any other social site is not a plan; it is a first step. The first choice you need to make is which mediums to concentrate on. The easy way to decide is to answer the question, “Where do your target customers spend their time?” Pick two mediums that are most used by your potential customers and allocate adequate time each week to really work on your plan – no less than 2 hours per week is suggested.

2) Get Involved One part of developing your social selling plan is to decide what you will actually do to maximize your time each week. Minimally you should join appropriate groups and get involved in discussions. If all you do is join a group and post your own personal commercial each week, don’t expect to see results. It takes time to build credibility by contributing insightful comments and adding value through what you contribute to the group. This also applies to anything business-related you post on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or any other site. Before you post anything always ask yourself, “Why would anyone care?”

3) Include a Blog Strategy Blogging is one of the most effective means of expanding your influence and reach through social media. Writing a blog that has interest to your targeted prospects and customers can build credibility and generate interest in your professional capability. It is very easy to create a blog through WordPress or any number of blog hosting sites, and it is also very easy to publicize your blog through social outlets. Here is the catch – once you start, you must make sure you maintain a regular discipline. It takes time, consistent use of good content, and patience to establish a reader base, but it is well worth the effort.

New Poll Shows Protecting Colorado’s Waterways is Good Policy and Good Politics

New Poll Shows Protecting Colorado’s Waterways is Good Policy and Good Politics

Jeanne Bassett, Environment Colorado (303) 573-3871, jbassett@environmentcolorado.org
Gary Wockner, Clean Water Action, (303) 405-6755, gwockner@cleanwater.org
Jay Campbell, Hart Research Associates, (202) 234-5570

Denver, CO — Coloradans overwhelmingly support an Obama administration proposal to restore protections for Colorado’s rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands, according to a recent poll commissioned by leading environmentalists and sportsmen organizations. Nearly seven in ten (67%) Colorado respondents support the President’s proposal to restore clean water safeguards, with strong support across political affiliations. The poll was released as the U.S. House of Representatives is poised to vote on the House Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act ( H.R. 5325) next week. The bill includes a provision to block the President from restoring critical clean water protections. However, the poll’s findings indicate that blocking those protections could be a political dead end for many in Congress.

Two-thirds of Coloradans (66%) say they would feel more favorable toward their Representative if he or she supported the restoration of clean water protections, including more than 60% of Independents in the state. “Coloradans’ message is clear: we want our water to be clean and safe and we support restoring Clean Water Act protections to achieve this,” said Jay Campbell, Vice President for Hart Research Associates , the firm that conducted the poll. “Their support is extraordinary in both its depth and its breadth. Given the contentiousness we see on nearly every issue, when you have an idea that large majorities of Republicans, Independents, and Democrats all agree on you know you have something that is both good policy and good politics.”

The poll was conducted in urban, suburban, and rural areas in Colorado. Major findings of the poll include: 1. There is extensive support in Colorado for restoring clean water protections. Not only is this support more intense than the opposition, but also it is shared broadly across party lines. 2. Supporting clean water protections can be a winning political issue for both Colorado’s Congressional delegation and the President. 3. Messages in favor of the proposal to restore clean water protections are much stronger than arguments in opposition to the proposal. (The full summary of the poll’s findings can be found here .)

“From kayaking on the Colorado River to spending time along the South Platte, this poll is further proof that protecting our waterways is enormously popular and important in Colorado,” said Bessie Schwarz, Field Organizer for Environment Colorado. “Unfortunately many of the waterways we love and cherish still are inadequately protected. It’s time for President Obama to stand up for Colorado’s waterways and finalize these critical protections.” “The streams and wetlands at issue here are vital parts of Colorado’s water infrastructure because they filter pollution, prevent floods and affect the drinking water of over three million Coloradans. Clarifying protection for these vulnerable water bodies is an important step forward,” said Gary Wockner, Colorado Program Director, Clean Water Action.

The findings of this poll echo the immense public support these protections have consistently enjoyed across the state, from thousands of concerned citizens, and dozens of family farmers, local elected officials, recreational businesses, and many more. The poll was commissioned by American Rivers, Clean Water Action, Clean Water Network, Earthjustice, Environment Colorado, the Izaak Walton League of America, the League of Conservation Voters, the National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, and Waterkeeper Alliance.

New Report Says Energy Efficiency Is More Important Than Renewable Energy

New Report Says Energy Efficiency Is More Important Than Renewable Energy
Link from John Howley Green Energy

A new report confirms what I have been saying for at least the past ten years. That is, Energy Efficiency will improve our energy independence and reduce our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions faster, cheaper, and by a greater amount than even the most optimistic projections for solar, wind, and all other renewable energy sources combined. Titled "The Long-Term Energy Efficiency Potential: What the Evidence Suggests," the new report is from the American Council on an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The report outlines three scenarios under which the U.S. could either continue on its current path or cut energy consumption by the year 2050 almost 60 percent, add nearly two million net jobs in 2050, and save energy consumers as much as $400 billion per year (the equivalent of $2600 per household annually).

According to the ACEEE, America is thinking too small when it comes to energy efficiency, while also making the mistake of "crowding out" economically beneficial investments in energy efficiency by focusing on riskier and more expensive bids to develop new energy sources. So why aren't we investing in Energy Efficiency? Because it is difficult to make money in Energy Efficiency when energy prices are so low. When the price of energy is low, then every BTU or KWH you save by becoming more energy efficient is worth very little. As energy prices rise, every BTU or KWH saved becomes that much more valuable. Just today, the New York Times reports that oil and gas companies are "flaring" or burning off natural gas at oil wells because the price of natural gas is so low right now that it is cheaper to waste the gas than to find a place to store it. This is an incredibly inefficient use of resources. The inefficiency has absolutely nothing to do with the state of technology. The inefficiency is driven 100% by the low price of natural gas. Why bother saving natural gas, when it is actually cheaper to waste it? The other barrier holding back energy efficiency is the dispersion of benefits.

Unlike a power plant, where the owners of the plant can capture the lion's share of the economic benefits, the benefits of energy efficiency tend to be more dispersed and indirect. According to the ACEEE, increased investments in energy efficiency would allow lower investments in power plants and other supply infrastructure, thereby substantially lowering overall energy expenditures on an economy-wide basis in the residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, and electric power sectors. In plain English, the people who pay for increases in energy efficiency don't necessarily get all the benefits directly. What we need -- and what the ACEEE urges -- are government policies that incentivize a longer-term and society-wide view to the issue of energy sustainability and independence. And the new ACEEE report provides the data to back up the long-term benefits both to investors and to the health of the U.S. economy. Examples of potential large-scale energy efficiency savings identified by ACEEE include the following: Electric Power.

Our current system of generating and delivering electricity to U.S. homes and businesses is an anemic 31 percent energy efficient. That is, for every three units of coal or other fuel we use to generate the power, we manage to deliver less than one unit of electricity to our homes and businesses. What the U.S. wastes in the generation of electricity is more than Japan needs to power its entire economy. What is even more astonishing is that our current level of (in)efficiency is essentially unchanged in the half century since 1960, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower spent his last year in the White House. Transportation. The fuel economy of conventional petroleum-fueled vehicles continues to grow while hybrid, electric, and fuel cell vehicles gain large shares, totaling nearly three-quarters of all new light-duty vehicles in 2050 in the report's middle scenario. Aviation, rail, and shipping energy use declines substantially in this scenario through a combination of technological and operational improvements. In the most aggressive scenario, there is a shift toward more compact development patterns, and greater investment in alternative modes of travel and other measures that reduce both passenger and freight vehicle miles traveled. This scenario also phases out conventional light-duty gasoline vehicles entirely, increases hybrid and fuel cell penetration for heavy-duty vehicles, and reduces aviation energy use by 70 percent. Buildings.

In residential and commercial buildings the evidence suggests potential reductions of space heating and cooling needs as the result of building shell improvements of up to 60 percent in existing buildings, and 70-90 percent in new buildings. The ACEEE scenarios also incorporate advanced heating and cooling systems (e.g., gas and ground-source air conditioners and heat pumps and condensing furnaces and boilers), decreased energy distribution losses, advanced solid-state lighting, and significantly more efficient appliances. Industry. In the industrial sector, energy efficiency opportunities reduce 2050 energy use by up to half, coming less from equipment efficiency and more from optimization of complex systems. The ACEEE analysis focuses on process optimization in the middle scenario, but also anticipates even greater optimization of entire supply chains in the most aggressive scenario, allowing for more efficient use of feedstocks and elimination of wasted production. Are such advances in energy efficiency realistic? As the ACEEE report points out, the U.S. already has achieved considerable advances in the energy efficiency context and is poised to do more: "

The U.S. economy has tripled in size since 1970 and three-quarters of the energy needed to fuel that growth came from an amazing variety of efficiency advances—not new energy supplies. Indeed, the overwhelming emphasis in current policy debates on finding new energy supplies is such that emphasis on new supplies may be crowding out investments and innovations that can help to achieve greater levels of energy productivity.

Going forward, the current economic recovery, and our future economic prosperity, will depend more on new energy efficiency behaviors and investments than we've seen in the last 40 years."
John J.P. Howley

Four Ways to Get Denver Renewable Energy Green Employers and Recruiters To Come After You When Job Searching

Four Ways to Make Employers and Recruiters Come After You!
Jobs Info Trends Blog Link

Share to TwitterShare to Facebook Utilizing job listings, networking in your industry (and other industries) and applying to companies you want to work at -- these are all great ways to go after a job. But how can you make employers and recruiters come after you? We asked Career Rocketeer's Chris Perry, a career-search and personal-branding expert, for four self-promotion tips. Here's what he advises for the modern job seeker:

1. Start Blogging Starting and maintaining your own blog requires commitment and an investment of your time, energy and creativity. While you can blog on any topic you desire, focusing your blog's theme and content to better serve your industry can be an outstanding way to show off your personal brand and demonstrate your unique value to potential employers and career stakeholders. A blog can be a great entrepreneurial venture to include on your resume and online profiles, and it demonstrates industry involvement and contribution outside of your full-time experience. Blogs are easy to start on numerous free and self-hosted platforms.

2. Get QuotedWhether you start your own blog or contribute guest posts regularly to industry-related blogs, getting quoted in blogs, online magazines, books and printed periodicals adds a new credential for you to tout in your job search and boosts your personal brand. Help a Reporter Out (HARO) is a free service that links journalists, bloggers and authors who need quotes from experts and experts-to-be who can provide them. Sign up to receive daily queries from HARO, and respond as often as possible (and as appropriate) to queries related to your field or areas of interest. Before long, you may be quoted in the Wall Street Journal or interviewed for a leading blog, which will increase your credibility across your network and beyond.

3. Get to Know the Important Players in Your IndustryMost job seekers and professionals neglect informational interviews, likely because they sound boring, hard to get, ineffective or all of the above. But informational interviews are actually powerfully effective both in your job search and in your professional networking. By reaching out and asking for a few minutes to learn about a fellow professional's career and experience as well as for a bit of advice (note: this does not mean asking for a job), you get a chance to introduce yourself and your brand, and make a stronger connection with someone new. While this person may not be hiring when you meet, you are now on his radar and may be the first candidate he calls for his next opening.

4. Step Up to the PodiumIf you like public speaking and have something relevant to share with your peers, whether it be advice, experience or case studies, consider developing a presentation or series of presentations you can pitch to various industry associations, alumni groups and other organizations. Whether they're webinars or in-person events, your presentations will set you apart as a confident thought leader who has true value to share with others, whether it be an audience or an employer. Research organizations and associations to find out the topics and events they are currently offering, so you can then offer something to serve unmet needs or complement their current event programming.

Vestas CEO: U.S. Wind Market To Drop 80% Without Tax Credit, More Changes in Colorado & Abound

U.S. wind market to drop 80% without tax credit Denver Business Journal Date:
Monday, June 11, 2012 Link

The chief executive of Vestas Wind Systems, the world's largest wind turbine manufacturer, said the U.S. market for wind turbines is likely to fall by 80 percent in 2013 if Congress allows a federal production tax credit to expire later this year. Vestas operates four factories for wind turbine components in Colorado, employing some 1,600 workers.

The Reuters news agency quotes Ditlev Engel, CEO of the Danish company, as saying at a gathering of government officials in Denmark Sunday that the federal tax credit, which is critical for financing wind projects in the U.S., is unlikely to get extended during an election year, leading to a rush of wind-power activity in the U.S. this year ahead of its expiration.

Denver Mayor Touts World Energy Forum and Renewable Energy Job Growth in Colorado

The inaugural World Renewable Energy Forum will come to the Denver Convention Center in a week, bringing thousands of representatives from 66 countries. The event "will be the first time that solar energy powerhouses will come together under one roof to advance the use of solar energy, energy efficiency and other sustainable technologies worldwide," Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said today.

"We are excited to host this inaugural event with global energy leaders to discuss how to meet the world's economic, environmental and security challenges through the advancement of renewable energy technologies," said the mayor.

While touting the forum, Hancock also said that Denver "is a national leader in the energy industry" and the forum will "shine a bright spotlight on this booming sector." "Job growth is happening right here in Denver by renewable energy companies from around the nation and around the world, and by the city and county of Denver," said the mayor. Hancock said that since 2010, more than 100 jobs have been created through programs and initiatives managed by the city. And as recently as this week, he added, the city has launched a call center and hired three employees to assist Denver residents and businesses on their path to save energy as a part of the Denver Energy Challenge.

Latin America Report: Brazil's Earth Summit Gathering to Address Key Energy Issues

New Hampshire, USA  The timing couldn't be better as Rio de Janeiro puts the finishing touches on Earth Summit 2012, dubbed "Rio+20" because it marks two decades since the city hosted the inaugural event that was credited with breakthrough agreements.

A lot has changed since that summer gathering in 1992, and, well, a lot remains the same. But the politics of the day — compounded by a sputtering world economy that continues to struggle to regain its footing — is putting these issues into the mainstream. So far, more than 130 heads of state have said they will attend the event from June 20 to 22, which is billed as a summit but will unfold more like a conference.

President Obama, who continues his election-year push amid criticisms over his clean energy policy, has yet to indicate whether he will attend. The conference is broken down with seven topic areas that cover disasters, oceans, water, food, cities, energy and jobs. All of these are pillars of healthy populations, but they are even more critical to the growing economies in Latin America that are increasingly looking to renewable energy as a way to boost power and production.

China to Spend $27 Billion on Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency This Year

Just confirming the easy bet Goldman Sachs is putting on cleantech (which I just wrote about), China is reportedly going to spend $27 billion this year alone on cleantech (energy efficiency and conservation, clean energy, and emissions reductions). “The country’s finance ministry said it wants to promote energy-saving products, solar and wind power and accelerate the development of renewable energy and hybrid cars,” the Guardian reports.

Of course, this comes on the heels of a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) showing that China’s rapid growth was a key factor in bringing annual CO2 emissions up to a record and very concerning level in 2011, despite carbon emissions reductions in the US and EU. Nonetheless, as noted there, China’s carbon intensity has actually dropped 15% (from 2005 to 2011) due to its tremendous cleantech investments. “In the long term, China is targeting to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 40-45% by 2020, compared with 2003 levels and aims to boost its use of renewable energy to 15% of overall energy consumption,” the Guardian piece adds.

Bill Clinton Is Headliner at Sustainability Enclave, More Energy News

Bill Clinton Is Headliner at Sustainability Enclave
By MIREYA NAVARRO Link
Green: Politics

The Sustainable Operations Summit, an annual meeting of leaders from the political, business and environmental spheres, will unfold this week in New York City with Bill Clinton as the keynote speaker.

The conference, from Tuesday through Thursday at the New York Hilton in Midtown Manhattan, is expected to attract some 400 participants to panel discussions on energy-related topics like the management and performance of buildings. The conference will also feature tours and receptions to call attention to New York’s green advances, from the retrofitting of the Empire State Building to construction of the High Line, a public park on the site of a former freight railway line.

No environmental event is complete without a celebrity or two. The actor Don Cheadle, currently the good-will ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program, is scheduled to speak on Wednesday on “Creating Awareness/Building a Culture of Sustainability.” And Mr. Clinton is to address the conference on Thursday about his own climate initiative and President Obama’s Better Buildings Challenge, part of a broader effort led by Mr. Clinton to promote investment in building energy upgrades.

Renewable Energy: A Strategy for Long-Term Survival

Renewable Energy: A Strategy for Long-Term Survival
by Joel Boyce

This year, Care2 decided to expand Earth Day into Earth Month, since there is so much to explore when it comes to the environment. Every day in April, we’ll have a post about some of the most important topics for the environment, exploring and explaining the basics. It’s a great tool to help you get started with helping the environment or help explain it to others. See the whole series here.

What is Renewable Energy?
Broadly speaking, renewable energy is an energy source that naturally replenishes itself. Energy captured directly from the sun as heat (in solar thermal) or electricity (in solar voltaic) are good examples of renewable. When we use up this energy, we can just get more the next time the sun shines.

This is in comparison to a non-renewable energy source, which, by definition, will eventually run out. Fossil fuels are non-renewable. The bulk of the world’s oil reserves are expected to be gone by mid-century.

Endless Energy
Renewables are a free lunch. We will never have any major energy crises as a result of a renewable energy sources drying up. That’s because renewables are ultimately drawn from energy sources that will outlast the Earth itself.

The primary source of renewables is ultimately radiative energy received from the sun. Solar energy captures energy directly from the radiation that strikes the Earth’s surface. However, temperature differences due to the uneven heating of the Earth ultimately power our planet’s weather systems. Thus, wind power and wave power are also a form of solar energy, as is hydroelectric (which is replenished by rainfall).

Plants also store solar energy in the chemical bonds that knit up their living tissue. This energy can be consumed by humans and other animals who can, in turn, do more useful work. Or the energy can be released more directly, as in the examples of burning firewood or bio-fuels (living plant-derived ethanols, for example).

Two non-solar renewables are geothermal energy, which is partly powered by radioactive decay deep in the Earth, and energy captured from the ocean’s tides, which is ultimately drawn from the gravitational tug of both the moon and sun on our planet’s oceans.

Ancient Solar and Unwanted Byproducts
It comes as a surprise to some people that fossil fuels like oil, coal and natural gas are ultimately sun-derived energy sources as well. Made from dead plants and animals that were unable to decompose (usually because they were covered in mud and water where decomposers and oxygen couldn’t get at them), time and pressure eventually compressed them into energy-dense combustibles.

The critical difference between renewable and non-renewable sources, from an environmental perspective, is this: renewable sources, even bio-fuels, allow us to use only as much energy in a given period of time as our planet receives from the sun, its core and tidal forces.

Our ancient hunter-gatherer ancestors utilized fire as a tool and an energy source, but the creation of energy storing plant-tissue via photosynthesis and the decomposition of that same tissue via herbivorous stomachs, decomposing microorganisms, or a campfire, is the complementary part of that cycle, and results in the same chemical products that initially went into it (carbon dioxide and water). Ultimately, our stock of firewood is limited by the amount of solar energy captured by our forests.

Non-renewables allow us to gain additional energy stored at a previous time, but both the energy and the physical byproducts are outside of our planet’s short-term cycles. The burning of fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide that has been stored away for hundreds of millions of years, resulting in a rapid and violent shift in our climate. Some of the side-effects include running out of things that are supposed to be self-sustaining, like our fishing stocks, arable farmland and precious biodiversity.

Even nuclear energy, which many environmentalists advocate as the lesser of two non-renewable evils, releases large amounts of energy, but the process of nuclear fission creates byproducts that are difficult to store and dangerous to human health.

Renewable Experience Explosive Growth With Obama

Renewables Experience Explosive Growth in First Three Years of Obama Administration
By Kenneth Bossong, SUN DAY Campaign
April 2, 2012 |

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- According to the most recent issue of the "Monthly Energy Review" by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), with data through December 31, 2011, renewable energy sources expanded rapidly during the first three years of the Obama Administration while substantially outpacing the growth rates of fossil fuels and nuclear power.

Between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2011, renewable energy sources (i.e., biofuels, biomass, geothermal, solar, water, wind) grew by 27.12 percent. By comparison, during the same three-year period, total domestic energy production increased by just 6.72 percent with natural gas and crude oil production growing by 13.66 percent and 14.27 percent respectively. Moreover, during the same period, nuclear power declined by 1.99 percent and coal dropped by 7.16 percent.

Looking at all energy sectors (e.g., electricity, transportation, thermal), renewable energy sources accounted for 11.74 percent of domestic energy production in 2011 — compared to 9.85 percent in 2008. In fact, renewable energy sources provided 10.90 percent more energy in 2011 than did nuclear power, although nuclear still provides a larger share of the nation’s electricity. (On the consumption side, which includes oil and other energy imports, renewable sources accounted for 9.29 percent of total U.S. energy use during 2011.)

During the first three years of the Obama Administration, geothermal grew by 15.63 percent, hydropower by 26.28 percent, solar by 28.09 percent, biofuels by 46.58 percent, and wind by 113.92 percent. Only biomass dipped - by 1.21 percent. Hydropower accounted for 34.62 percent of domestic energy production from renewable sources in 2011, followed by biomass (26.75 percent), biofuels (22.20 percent), wind (12.75 percent), geothermal (2.42 percent), and solar (1.24 percent).

Looking at just the electricity sector, according to EIA’s "Electric Power Monthly," with data through December 31, 2011, net electrical generation by non-hydro renewable energy sources (i.e., biomass, geothermal, solar, wind) grew by 54.6 percent during the first three years of the Obama Administration. During the same period, conventional hydropower expanded by 27.6 percent. Combined, electrical output from renewable energy sources was 36.5 percent greater for calendar year 2011 than it was for calendar year 2008. By comparison, between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2011, natural gas used in electrical generation grew by 15.1 percent while nuclear and coal dropped by 2.0 percent and 12.7 percent respectively.

During 2011, hydro and non-hydro renewables combined accounted for 12.67 percent of net electrical generation compared to 9.25 percent in 2008. Comparing the 12-months of 2011 against the same time period in 2008, wind grew by 116.3 percent, solar by 110.0 percent, hydropower by 27.6 percent, geothermal by 12.5 percent, and biomass by 3.1 percent. For all of 2011, non-hydro renewables accounted for 4.75 percent of net electrical generation while conventional hydropower accounted for 7.91 percent. However, non-hydro renewables have been growing rapidly and for the last quarter of 2011, they accounted for 5.5 percent of net U.S. electrical generation. Among the non-hydro renewables contributing to net electrical generation in 2011, wind accounted for 61.4 percent, followed by biomass (29.1 percent), geothermal (8.6 percent), and solar (0.9 percent).

“The numbers speak for themselves — notwithstanding politically-inspired criticism, the pro-renewable energy policies pioneered by the Obama Administration have generated dramatic growth rates during the past three years, vastly outpacing those of all other energy sources,” said Ken Bossong, Executive Director of the SUN DAY Campaign. “The investments in sustainable energy made by the federal government as well as state and private funders have paid off handsomely underscoring the short-sightedness of emerging proposals to slash or discontinue such support.”
